Skin cancer and mole and skin health checks

An experienced skin doctor (most of our doctors are accredited by the Australasian Skin Cancer College) systematically examines your skin and/or any spots, moles or areas of concern. Skin cancer and mole examinations include clinical and dermoscopic photography of lesions of interest/concern.

What type of appointment should I book?

If in doubt and you've never had a skin check before, you should consider a full body skin check with total body mole mapping photography.

You might not need to repeat mole mapping at every future appointment, but an initial set of photos is a good baseline for comparison at future skin checks.

Still not sure what type of mole or skin check is right for you? More information...

An accredited skin cancer doctor checks moles, spots or body areas of concern for signs of skin cancer. Examination is conducted using a dermoscope, which magnifies and lights the skin with a polarised light. This makes fine structures within the skin easier to see, and significantly improves early detection of skin cancers. Any spots of concern are photographed and stored in MoleScope, a shared medical record system. You will have access to these photos plus any notes the doctor makes about your moles and recommended treatments. Your consultation also includes information about how you can check your own moles in future.

  • People concerned about a new or odd-looking mole or spot
  • People who have noticed a mole or spot of concern between their regular full-body skin cancer checks
  • People at very low risk of skin cancer (e.g. children) with a just one new or odd-looking mole or spot
  • People who know they are at risk for developing skin cancers, such as melanoma, and want to stay on top of their mole checks and health

Follow-up photography, also known as serial dermoscopic photography, allows your doctor to monitor changes in skin lesions that look unusual, but are at low risk of being skin cancer.

  • If an atypical (odd-looking) spot shows no signs of change on follow-up photography, it is unlikely to be a skin cancer.
  • If an atypical spot changes on follow-up photography, this is sometimes an early warning sign of skin cancer which might otherwise have been undiagnosed until later.

Follow-up photography is useful for avoiding multiple and/or unnecessary biopsy procedures, especially in people with many atypical moles. The usual interval between initial examination of a skin lesion and follow-up photography is 3 months.

If you need follow-up photography, your doctor will recommend it when your mole or skin lesion is initially examined.
