Acne: true and false

A lot of the things you think you know about acne might not be true.

Common questions about acne

Is acne caused by poor hygiene?

No. Acne is not a sign that someone is dirty. Gentle cleansing is useful, but scrubbing or washing too often can irritate the skin.

Does diet matter?

Diet is one of several possible influences. Some people notice an association with high-glycaemic foods or dairy, but responses vary. Avoid blaming yourself or adopting restrictive diets without advice.

Does acne mean a hormone imbalance?

Many people with acne have normal hormone levels. A clinician can assess whether other symptoms suggest a hormonal condition.

Does acne need treatment?

Acne can affect comfort, confidence and wellbeing and can leave scars. It can persist beyond adolescence. Help is worthwhile when acne is painful, scarring or affecting you.

Getting help

Your GP is a good starting point. Spot Check Clinic provides limited acne care for existing patients; more complex or severe acne may need a dermatologist. Contact reception if you are unsure which service suits your needs.
