SKIN SURGERY
Skin lump, cyst and lipoma assessment
Have a lump assessed and find out whether removal is appropriate.
- Surgical removal where suitable
- Medicare rebates may apply
- No referral needed
Assessment before removal
Many people book because they want a lump removed. The first step is understanding what the lump is.
A doctor can assess the lump, discuss the most likely diagnosis and explain the appropriate next step. Depending on the findings, that may be removal, monitoring, imaging, biopsy or referral.
This assessment-first approach is particularly important for lumps that are growing, painful, changing, recurrent or located in a more complex area.
Cyst assessment and removal
Cysts are common lumps that develop beneath the skin. They may remain stable for years, slowly enlarge, become inflamed or occasionally rupture.
When appropriate, cysts can be removed with a minor surgical procedure performed under local anaesthetic.
Lipoma assessment and removal
Lipomas are benign fatty lumps that usually sit beneath the skin. Many remain unchanged and do not require treatment, while others may become uncomfortable, continue to enlarge or be cosmetically unwanted.
Suitability for removal depends on factors such as size, location and the characteristics of the lump.
Other skin lumps and growths
Not every lump is a cyst or lipoma. A lump may represent another type of benign skin growth, an inflamed lesion, a lymph node or a condition that requires further investigation.
When to book a skin check instead
A skin surgery assessment is intended for lumps beneath or within the skin where removal may be considered.
If your concern is a mole or skin spot that is new, changing, bleeding, crusting or otherwise suspicious, a 1–3 spot check is usually the more appropriate appointment.
Fees and Medicare rebates
Your assessment fee is charged at the time of appointment.
If a procedure is recommended, the fee depends on the diagnosis, size, location and complexity of treatment. Medicare rebates may apply where treatment is medically indicated.
