Downtime after fractional laser treatment

Ablative fractional laser can cause significant facial redness for a week or more following treatment. Once it settles, the skin is usually smoother and clearer than before treatment. This page documents recovery from fractional ablative laser treatment.

It’s possible to perform most sedentary activities and work the day after a fractional laser treatment, but some people prefer to stay home and indoors during recovery. This period is referred to as downtime.

During downtime, it’s important to avoid anything that causes further irritation to the skin. This includes:

  • Sun exposure.
  • Heat and sweating.
  • Potentially irritating topical skin care products such as retinoids and vitamin C.
  • All fragrances, essential oils, antiseptics and vitamin E.

Keep the skin moisturised, and when outside, use a gentle sunscreen. We recommend using sunscreen formulated especially for sensitive skin, such as Cetaphil Sun Kids.

After fractional ablative laser treatment

For the first few days, you need to manage discomfort and inflammation. Following that, avoid sunlight and skin irritants for several weeks.

It’s possible to speed up the recovery process with LED low level light therapy.
