What’s the clear fluid coming from my wound?

What is exudate?
Exudate is fluid released from a wound. A small amount of clear or straw-coloured fluid can occur during healing and helps maintain a moist wound environment.
Could it be infection?
Fluid colour alone cannot confirm or rule out infection. Contact the clinic if discharge increases, becomes thick or foul-smelling, or occurs with increasing pain, spreading redness, warmth, swelling or fever.
Managing a weeping wound
Follow the dressing and cleaning instructions for your procedure. Use the wound-care product recommended for you; ordinary silicone scar gels are not necessarily suitable for open wounds.
When to get in touch
If the wound is not settling or you are unsure, contact the clinic about your wound. Seek prompt medical care for an urgent concern rather than waiting for an email response.
