The “best” treatment for facial pigmentation depends on various factors, including the cause of the pigmentation, the cost of the treatment, the number of sessions required, and the location of the treatment. Patients should consult with an experienced doctor to determine the most appropriate treatment plan for their specific needs.

Facial pigmentation is a common skin problem that affects people of all ages and skin types. It can be caused by various factors, such as sun exposure, hormonal changes, genetics, and certain medications.

The most effective treatment for face pigmentation depends on the cause of the condition:

  • For example, if the pigmentation is due to sun damage, laser or BBL treatment is extremely effective. These treatments target the pigmented areas and destroy the melanin-producing cells, resulting in a more even skin tone.
  • If the pigmentation is caused by melasma, BBL treatment may not be the best option, as it can stimulate more pigment production and worsen the condition. In this case, Q-switch pigment laser or topical creams containing vitamin C, hydroquinone or tretinoin may be more effective.

As well as efficacy, other factors can help determine the “best” treatment. These could include:

  • Cost of treatment: BBL, laser and IPL treatment is expensive compared with other treatments.
  • Number of treatment sessions required: Laser, IPL and BBL treatments may require repeated visits to a clinic. Topical creams and ointments can be applied at home.
  • Risk of side effects: Cryotherapy (freezing) can be an effective way of treating some pigmentation at minimal cost, although there may be a risk of scarring. Topical creams may cause skin dryness, redness, peeling and irritation.

We recommend BBL and/or laser treatment for the majority of cases of facial pigmentation we see in Spot Check Clinic, but only after examination and assessment by a doctor accredited with the Australasian Skin Cancer College and with experience and qualifications in cosmetic medicine, dermatology and laser/IPLL safety. In Melbourne, BBL treatment, IPL and laser can legally be provided by individuals with no training or qualifications in laser safety or the diagnosis or management of skin conditions. For this reason, it’s important to have facial pigmentation assessed by a dermatologist or GP with appropriate skin experience, qualifications and training. This enables you to discuss the range of pigmentation treatments that are suitable for your condition and select the “best” one for you.
