Medicare rebates are payable for consultations and procedures, but not dermoscopic photography. For this reason, we are unable to bulk bill most consultations. Rebates are variable according to the duration of consultation and complexity of procedures.

Some private health insurers pay a rebate for melanoma screening photography.

Missed appointments

If you book an appointment and do not attend, or if you cancel an appointment giving less than 24 hours' notice, you may be charged a non-attendance fee.

An additional series of 28 region photographs of the entire body are taken to create a record of your skin surface.

Recommended for high risk patients. The best method for detecting current skin cancers and identifying potential skin cancers by monitoring changes over time.

Full body skin check

Head to toe examination by an accredited skin cancer doctor with dermoscopic photography and digital analysis of any spots of concern, with limited body mapping photography (1 or 2 regions).

Recommended for many patients as it includes examination of hard to check areas like scalp, toe nails and back. Your doctor will recommend a repeat frequency depending on your risk factors.

One spot check

This is a quick examination of one spot only. An accredited skin cancer doctor examines one single spot of concern. Includes dermoscopic photography and digital analysis of the spots of concern. (Online access to these photographs and other information about your spot is not provided.)

Recommended if you regularly have full body checks and have identified a new, changing or unusual spot. Because this is a relatively brief appointment, it usually available at short notice.

Up to 3 spots check

An accredited skin cancer doctor examines up to three spots of concern. This service includes dermoscopic photography and digital analysis of the spots of concern. After your consultation you will have online access to any photographs taken during your consultation.

Recommended if you regularly have full body checks and have identified more than one new, changing or unusual spots.

Total body photography (“mole mapping”)

Series of 28 region photographs of the entire body without medical consultation or assessment.

Please note: The doctor or nurse will not examine your moles/spots. For people who have already had their skin checked by trusted skin cancer doctor/nurse or dermatologist who has recommended total body mapping.

Online consulting

Submit a photo of a spot or lump of concern and receive a written opinion from an accredited skin cancer doctor within 72 hours. The fee is payable for each photograph submitted.

Description of services

Full Body Skin Check: Standard

  • Skin cancer risk assessment

One Spot Check

  • Examination of spot of concern by an accredited skin cancer specialist doctor using a dermoscope
  • High magnification photography of spot of concern with digital analysis where possible
  • Advice on treatment/management of the spot

Up to Three Spots Check

  • Skin cancer risk assessment
  • Examination of spots, or one body region (e.g. back or arms) of concern by skin cancer specialist using dermoscope
  • High magnification photography of spots of concern with digital analysis where possible
  • Online access to photos of the spots of concern

Follow-up photos

Follow up photography of atypical/abnormal lesions detected at initial full body skin check. This appointment does not include checking for skin cancers — it is only for re-examining and repeat photography of previously-identified abnormal spots.

 

Biopsy (no stitches)

 

Punch or shave biopsy of skin lesion (usually just part of the skin lesion) to determine diagnosis and whether further treatment will be required.

Excision or biopsy procedure with stitches

Fees variable, depending on pathology of lesion or cancer and size/complexity of procedure. Different fees apply for:

  • Excision biopsy standard (usually approximately $160)
  • Excision biopsy large/complex
  • Excision of SCC, BCC: standard
  • Excision of SCC, BCC: large/complex
  • Excision of melanoma: standard. (All large/complex melanoma cases referred to a private plastic surgeon or melanoma clinic at Peter Mac, The Alfred, Austin)

Total body photography (“mole mapping”)

A series of approximately 30 photographs, each focusing on a different area of the body.

total body photography can be performed as a stand-alone independent procedure without a medical consultation or examination (for example, if recommended by your dermatologist). Alternatively, it can be performed as part of a skin check. Your Spot Check doctor can advise whether mole mapping would be a useful procedure for you.

Discounts

Discount pricing is available for:

  • Pensioners and health care card holders. Must present a current valid Australian Health Care or Pensioner card.
  • Children under 18.

Discounts are offered at the discretion of the treating doctor and may not apply under certain circumstances. If you book an appointment and fail to attend, or if you cancel with less than 24 hours' notice, you will not qualify for any further discounts from Spot Check Clinic.

DVA card holders are bulk billed for all services covered by Medicare.

Exclusions

Patients not covered by Medicare are charged the standard fee for all services.

A higher fee may be payable for longer or complex cases where the medical consultation takes longer than 45 minutes.

Where treatments and services are not covered by Medicare (e.g. online consultations and treatments not covered by Medicare), a fee will be charged.
